Professional Photography or Fifty Dollar Photographer?
Why is it that so many people cringe at the thought of professional photography?
No secrets here… Because it can be expensive!
How many times have you seen a Facebook ad like, “Wanted: Photographer that doesn’t cost the earth.” It seems everyone’s looking for the fifty dollar photographer to come and take some ‘professional’ photos for them.
Now, I get it. It pays to shop around, save money, and be careful with your hard earned cash. Definitely! But when it comes to scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel to find the cheapest photographer near you… it can pay to be a little wary.
Professional Photography for $50?
It can be possible to get some quality, cheaper photography from time to time, so let’s look at a few reasons you might find a Fifty Dollar Photographer…
They Are New To The Game
New to the game can mean a lack of experience, but not always. This could be someone who has a lot of experience behind the lens but has never turned it into a business. It’s risky though, so do your homework on any of their work you can find online and don’t be afraid to ask. A good photographer will be more than happy to share their previous work with you.
They Have Low Overheads
This could be similar to the last point. They may be new to photography and might not have a lot of stuff or a big studio to pay for, etc. Not such a big deal if they can take great photos and are still able to edit and provide you with quality images.
Photography Is Just A Hobby
Just a weekend thing. When they need a cool $50 for something, they’ll throw the word out on Facebook and find someone to take photos for. Good or bad, right or wrong? It comes down to checking out their work and see if you’re happy with it.
If they don’t take photography seriously, they might not take your memories seriously either.
A Model Call
A Model Call is a genuine reason for a professional photographer to reduce their rate or remove their fee completely. It’s a way for them to fill up their photo galleries with portrait shots that they don’t have yet, or don’t have as many as they want to have.
This is a great way to get cheaper professional photography… BUT… Be sure to ask how much they are going to charge for digital images or products, this can be a nasty shock if you were also hoping for free images afterward.
When someone is just starting out, someone needs to give them a break, we all started somewhere after all, but it can be a risk.
I have seen people get burned time and time again from cheap photographers. They ended up with blurred or poorly edited (if any) photos and a good, professional photographer could’ve saved the pain.
By all means, if you know someone personally that’s just starting out, give them a chance. But, sometimes you can’t go back and get that photo, once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Keep an eye out for Model Calls or mini-sessions – They’re your best bet and getting quality work done cheaper!
Consider your options. Do your homework. Count the cost. Never rush in.
