“Natural childbirth felt like fire. Literal fire in my nether regions. I honestly left my body for most of it. I felt like I was looking down on myself from above.” —Lori, 39
“Birth is intense. The experience is sort of out-of-body. Time has no meaning. It’ll feel like time is dragging at certain points and then at other times, you’ll look up and suddenly realise hours have passed without your recollection. You also feel like you want to escape your own body — like this fight-or-flight instinct that keeps telling you to look for a way out because it’s so intense — but you can’t.” —Lauren, 31
“Giving birth was like experiencing every feeling and emotion possible. It was one of the most amazing times with my husband and we were given the incredible gift of life. No matter how different it went than we wanted it to, it was awesome! My husband would like to add that he imagines it to feel like ‘sliding down a joy rainbow into a cloud of kittens.'” —Katie, 28
“All the things you think birth will feel like will be wrong. I read all the books and thought I was so prepared, but it was way different than what I expected. It was much easier than I expected in some ways, but also a lot harder in other ways (like delivering the placenta afterwards).” —Olivia, 26
These reflections on the event of giving birth were taken from an online article, “What Giving Birth Really Feels Like, According to 18 Moms.” So, while everyone’s experience is different when it comes to giving birth, the fact remains that it literally is a once-in-a-lifetime event and the opportunity to have photos taken of this incredible moment is gone just as fast.
Why, you say, would you want to photograph this, sometimes traumatic, event?
Because at the end of it all, when the pain is gone (and it does go), you are left with a beautiful little package all bundled up and ready for a snuggle and though it doesn’t seem it at the time, the moments leading up to the birth; the real, raw emotion, the ecstasy, and the pain all fade with time and you’ll never have them back again.
You only get one chance to catch these amazing, life-changing moments.
And it’s not just about the birth; it’s the day, the time before, if you have a partner there with you it’s getting their reactions and emotions as well. It’s all about capturing this moment in time forever, making it a truly memorable occasion.
When I decided to take on birth photography, I was nervous that’s for sure. But as a mum of four myself, experiencing this side of birth was an incredible experience for me as well as the family involved.
For me being able to do this doesn’t come without sacrifice, not just from me, but from my family as well. My husband needs to be ‘on call’ in the event I get called in and someone needs to look after our little ones! When the time gets close, we pretty much discuss it each night before turning in just in case I get the call during the night. I’m grateful for their understanding and support.
But it’s worth it. It is worth it. So amazing to watch and even more amazing to be able to present to the new mum, photographs that tell the amazing story of the birth of her beautiful newborn child.
I’m on call for around 2 weeks for birth photography and I include all of the edited photographs when I complete a birth photography session.
